Comparing Donatello And Verrocchio's Sculptures

Donatello and Verrocchio’s sculptures reflect the changes from the first to the second half of the Early Renaissance. There are some similarities and differences between both sculptures. Starting off with the similarities, both sculptures are in the round sculptures, which people can go around to see. Also, they are both placed in front of a major churches and put up on high pedestals. In addition, they both are sculptures of military soldiers, not portraits of individuals. Moreover, both sculptures are done by using the lost-wax method. However, Donatello was the first sculptures to use it after a thousand years and Verrocchio was the first to use it in motion. Speaking about motion, one of the major differences between both sculptures is that Donatello’s sculpture is very static and still, while Verrocchio’s sculpture is in motion. Donatello’s sculpture is in strict profile pose and this is shown by the solder’s facing forward. Also, it is shown to be very static because it does not have twists around the neck of the horse nor the neck of the solder. On the other hand, Verrocchio’s work is in motion. For instance, in both sculptures you can see the wrinkles under their eyes. Also, the nose of the soldier is not perfect, it is big. However, Donatello's sculpture is generic, while Verrocchio's sculpture is individualized. In Donatello's work the rider has no expression on his face. His face is calm and posed and this is shown through the absence of furrowed brow. On the other hand, Verrocchio's sculpture is very individualized, but not portait.
