At the beginning of the play, Shakespeare is portraying Lord Capulet as a loving and understanding father to Juliet. While discussing her marriage with Paris, he insists that he must wait a couple years before she is “ripe to be a bride”. Also, Capulet says “my will to her consent is but a part” (I.ii.11-17). This shows that he actually cares about her and wants to take her opinion into consideration. Towards the end of the play, Lord Capulet drastically changes his mind on waiting a couple years for Juliet to get married. Instead, he decides on her marriage one day in advance because he wants to distract the town and himself from Tybalt's death. During the dance at which Romeo and Juliet meet, we see that he is a man that enjoys a party.
