The phrase “life is not always easy” can affect a person’s life in one of two ways. The first way is it can either hinder the person or hold them back from the one life they strive for. The other way or scenario would be that the person enhanced their life or the lives of others causing them to grow and or expand. The poems based upon the book Spoon River Anthology by Edgar lee Masters are; Mrs. George Reece, Louise Smith, Hon Henry Bennett, all of these poems are prime examples of how life is not easy. The poem is about Hon Henry Bennett and the struggles he faced in his life. The similarity Louise Smith has with Hon Henry Bennett is that both have to do with relationship problems. Bennett’s wife, Jenny, after his death took all of his fortune and money that he had earned. Soon after this Jenny married a different man named Willard. These two events exponentially affected Hon Henry Bennett’s life. After these two tragic events and the realization that his wife had only married him for his money and never truly loved him, changed his life causing him to grief and mourn through death. George Reece reflects more so the positive side to a negative outcome. Mrs. Reece’s husband worked a cashier during the hard times of the bank. While he was doing this The President Thomas Rhodes and his son accused Mrs. George Reece’s husband of something he never did. As stated from the poem, “The wreck was due to the president, Thomas Rhodes, and his vain, unscrupulous son.” Upon being accused of something he had never done, he was sent to prison. Mrs. Reece was then left with the children, leaving her with many obstacles to overcome. The positive outcome of this story or poem is that Mrs. George Reece did exactly that. She took care of her children, feed them, clothed them and prepared them for life and to send them into the real world. The difference this poem has compared to the others is the outcome and how Mrs. George Reece enhanced her life in all the trials she faced during
