Providing meaning to often vague client information is a skill often termed case conceptualization; this conceptualization is based on cognitive scientific literature (Betan, 2010). The process of psychotherapy is a relationship between two people with the same parameters of any human relationship; the concept of conceptualization within this relationship is subjective, interpersonal and cultural (Betan, 2010). The helpers understanding of the clients challenges and awareness that these challenges as unique to every client are the goals and treatment strategy (Betan, 2010). The conceptualization helps determine the strategy for treatment.
One method for building conceptualization is to develop an illness script; this script looks takes the most relevant information and the making of the most suitable finding at the moment with the client (Betan, 2010). This method aids the helper in organizing a complex narrative, presentation, and social style into an intelligible case (Betan, 2010). This conceptual understanding of the client is based in theory, however the helper does not fit the client into a theory, but rather the theory must be adapted to the client (Betan, 2010).
