The crowd stood to their feet to watch in anticipation as the football spiraled through the air. The spectators cheered when the young man caught the ball, and ran towards the end zone. The strapping football player’s tunnel vision of the end zone came to an abrupt stop when he collided with the Duquesne University's opposition. A hush quickly fell over the boisterous crowd as they waited for Preston Plevretes to regain consciousness.
Plevretes a former football player for La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had childhood aspirations of being in the NFL. His dream would never be fulfilled due to his decision to play with a concussion he suffered from a university football practice. The life changing event that would end his football career happened on Nov. 5, 2005.

“Staff referred players to the student health center unless a trip to the emergency room seemed in order,” said Gerzabek. Plevretes sought medical attention at the health center after the incident occurred in practice due to symptoms of headaches and vision problems. A nurse practitioner at his school administered a standardized concussion test incorrectly. The concussion symptoms continued after the visit to the health center, which prompted Plevretes to visit the emergency room. Eventually, the concussion symptoms subsided four days after his hospital visit, and Gerzabek allowed Plevretes to return to game play
