After reviewing examples of phrases within Brave New World, there is an evident idea that people are very attached to buying and consuming different goods. Aside from that, many industrialized nations in the Western Hemisphere have a similar public opinion about the level of consumption. With this level of consumption, there are details that make our society different from many others. As a result, consumption is a necessary aspect to help support society in both our world and the one of Brave New World, however, the methods to achieve this aspect have many similarities and difference. When comparing the necessities of consumption, there are political and economic reasons to need such a level of consumption. On a political level, consumption provides for the stability of infrastructure and governments. In our political system, a mixed market allows business to freely choose their goods, prices, and marketing methods, but the government has the ability to regulate the goods and methods of our economy. In Brave New World, the World State uses hypnopaedia to persuade the castes into relying on consumption. The phrases stated in class give evidence that citizens of the World State use consumption as a social status and rely on consumption to fit into society. In the novel, people that conserve are looked down upon because it is a social norm throw away old goods and buy new ones to replace it. In our current society, we have similar amounts of consumption, but have different ways to increase it.
