With the high cost of college and student loans, people are left asking if college is still worth it. In most cases, college is not worth it in today's America due to the high cost, student loans, and amount of time required. There are cases where college is indeed worth it, but there are alternatives and it isn't worth it for the large majority of people as it is just not necessary. There are often better options today that are cheaper and require less time. In today's America, college is not worth it for most people due to the high cost of student loans. As quoted by Elon Musk in the article “Elon Musk says college is basically for fun and not for learning”, “The Tesla billionaire Elon Musk thinks people “don’t need college to learn stuff” and says jobs at his companies should not require a degree” (The Guardian News Tue 10 Mar 2020). If someone like Elon Musk, one of the wealthiest people in the world with a net worth of 204.5 billion USD, says you don't need college to be successful, then it might be worth considering an alternative option. College is great for a good-paying job, but is it the best option? As put by Kat Tretina in the article “Is College Worth The Cost? Pros Vs. Cons”, “Trade schools, vocational schools or technical colleges provide hands-on training for different skilled careers. The programs tend to be much shorter than college programs, with students graduating in six months to two years.” (Tretina 4). Tretina also goes on to talk about other options such as Boot Camps and Entrepreneurship. Not only do programs like these provide a more direct path into a career, but it also helps fix the time problem that college presents. In conclusion, college is a great option for people pursuing careers in education or medical professions. but it is not the best option for the majority of people today. With such a large amount of access to free education and knowledge available to us through the internet, college is not as important as it once was.
