Crazy Horse
(Lakota)
An important leader for the Native Americans was Crazy Horse. He was from the Lakota tribe. Three reasons that he was important was because he took part in the Fetterman Massacre, never got hurt or died in battle, and also lead during the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Crazy Horse was born in 1842, near what is now Rapid Springs, South Dakota. His appearance was very different than the rest of the young boys in his tribe. He had a lighter skin tone and had curly hair. Crazy Horse was born at a good time for the Lakota tribe, the tribe had become the biggest group of the Sioux, and had expanded their territory greatly. So, the Sioux were getting very wealthy in resources and land.
Around the 1850’s, the Americans started moving west and taking more and more land from the Native American’s. They did not like this, so they started fighting back. Crazy Horse was at many important battles during this time. One battle that Crazy

forces hit harder than they had ever before on the Lakota. During these attacks, Sitting Bull fled with his forces to Canada, while Crazy Horse stayed and kept on fighting. Slowly, Crazy Horse’s supplies started getting less and less, because of this, many of his men left. Crazy Horse then surrendered at Fort Robinson in Nebraska, on May 6, 1877. The United States told Crazy Horse to stay on the reservation, but he did not follow their directions because he had to take his sick wife to his parents to take care of her. He then was arrested, and brought back to Fort Robinson. There was a quarrel between the guards and Crazy Horse, and he was shot in the kidney. Crazy Horse died on September 5, 1877, beside his father.
Crazy Horse was an important figure for the Native Americans. He rebelled against the “white men” and never died or injured in battle. Crazy Horse also took part in many major battle for the Native Americans, such as, the Fetterman Massacre and The Battle of Little
