Creating Classroom Norms

I have had experience with both options of creating classroom norms and rules in face-to-face classes with younger students as well as adult learners. Although I liked that students were collaborating and taking ownership of their learning environment, I found the amount of time spent on “discussing” student suggestions to meet my intention for the class were too costly. All of the rules and norms in online courses I’ve been involved in - as a student and facilitator - have been created by the facilitator alone. I prefer to establish the norms and rules so that students know, from the start, what is expected. I believe there can be just as much student buy-in if the norms and rules are created with respect and consistency.
