The year is 2016 and America is going to be electing a new president. We all claim that we know what we want in a president but, do we really? We want someone who keeps their word, powerful (but does not abuse the power) and honest. Little do we know that four years can change a person to become arrogant and cocky. This election is similar to Creon from the story of Antigone by Sophocles. Of course, written back in 441 B.C. Creon is a tragic hero because he is ignorant. He does not take others, or their opinions, into consideration. Antigone serves as a foil of Creon’s character by highlighting Creon’s character traits of being persistent, powerful, and a misogynist.

As a matter of fact, Creon explains to Haemon what it means to be a ruler. “That’s why they must support those in control, and never let some woman beat us down. If we must fall from power, let that come at some man’s hand- at least, we won’t be called inferior to any woman.” (Lines 769-774) This quote demonstrates Creon as misogynist because he claims that a man should only be succeeded by another man, not allow a woman to overthrow. Creon does not believe that women are able to achieve power. His his mind, it is wrong and against the females will to do so. Additionally, Creon speaks to Antigone of her punishment. She claims she did it out of love. “No woman’s going to govern me- no, no- not while I’m still alive.” (Lines 660-662) Antigone claims she did disobeyed his law out of law for her brother. He does not accept the fact that someone dared to challenge him and go against him. In the quote Creon is a misogynist because he believes it’s socially unacceptable for a woman to tell him what to do (govern him as he says.) He then, does not admit that she has a valid point for the burial of her brother and continues to put her down for her gender. Creon becomes sexist when he begins to realize that he is wrong and Antigone has a valid reason for going against his
