Creon Tragic Hero In Antigone

In Sophocles play, Antigone, Creon is a tragic hero because he did not want Antigone brother Polyneices buried. Creon said your not allowed to bury polyneices “ And yet you dared to break those very laws”(507). Antigone wanted to honor her mother’s children by not letting them be unburied. Creon said “A good man does not wish what we give him to be the same an evil man receives”(592). This means the two brothers were supposed to share being king so they both should get the same respect.

Creon believes what he wants because he is king. So when he doesn’t want Polyneices buried, he assumes that everyone needs to listen, but Antigone has her own beliefs and that is to bury her brother. Creon believes that Nobody should care, pray, or even touch Polyneices. Creon believes that leaving people unburied is a ultimate disgrace. Antigone “ I was born to love, not hate” This is saying that the way she was raised is to love everyone just like how she loves her family. Antigone believes that if her brother stays unburied it will offend the gods. ‘Death longs for the same rights for all’ this is Antigone informing Creon.

Antigone uses her strong power by helping people, like she helped her brother get buried. Antigone is such a good person that Ismene wanted to take the blame for burying Polyneices. Antigone sister Ismene is someone who follows the rules so for her to take the blame shows how much she cares for Antigone. Creon hubris is the reason why it leads to a downfall The hubris is supposed to inspire his iron fist, Creon is so worried about his iron fist and being king that he doesn’t realize that he has lost everything. Teiresias tells Creon that he needs to change or the cities will rise in hate against him. The cities have so much hate towards Creon because he so stubborn and doesn’t care about anybody but
