The cycle of violence within a domestic violence case starts with an incident. The initial incident can be emotional, physical, or sexual in nature. Then the first stage of the cycle of violence occurs. The first stage is where the tension builds. This is where the offender will become agitated easily, have a shortened fuse, and makes the ‘victim feel like they are walking on egg shells’.
The second stage of the cycle is the making-up stage. In this stage the abuser may apologize for the abuse. The abuser might also make promises of it never happening again. Another thing we will see is the abuser down playing the abuse, saying it was really that bad or that the victim is amplifying the story to make it look worse.
