1.2 Describe the roles the different agencies involved in safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.

Schools
All adults within the school have a responsibility to safeguard the welfare of the children. At school we have members of a safeguarding team who we can approach with any concerns we have about a child, The safeguarding team is led by the headteacher and there is also the Learning Mentor, Senco, Welfare Officer,and Provision Manager who we can also raise any concerns with that we have.
Schools have a duty and responsibility to develop children's awareness of what is acceptable and not acceptable behaviour, this will also include when using the Internet.

They also have a duty of care to alert children’s social care when child abuse is suspected. The doctor or health professional may also carry out observations and medical examinations of a child who is thought to be at risk or who has suffered from abuse.
They can be called to give evidence in court if a crime has been committed.
They can also provide information, contribute to children’s social care reports.

Police
The police work closely with children’s social services to protect children from harm, all police forces have a Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU).The police have a particular role to play their responsibilities are to decide on whether a crime has been committed and if so, to start a criminal investigation.
They also gather up evidence from all agencies involved including social care, and from any others thought to be involved.
They will take emergency action to remove the child or the perpetrator when there is evidence of harm or the risk of immediate danger.
