A Peer-Reviewed Article on Cystic Fibrosis
The article I chose is titled, Special Needs Populations: Care of the Patient with Cystic Fibrosis written by Katie Neufeld and Lauren Keith. This peer-reviewed article was published in November 2012 in AORN Journal, which stands for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses. This reading pertains to the genetic disorder of cystic fibrosis (CF). Cystic fibrosis is the type of disease that manifests a patient’s entire life and affects every body system. This topic is significant to me because my best friend was diagnosed with the disease at the age of three and understanding of how and why this disease manifests in his life will also help me better understand him as a person. The authors were successful in doing so by providing accurate, research-based information throughout the article in clear concise paragraphs. The intended audience for this article was mostly geared towards nursing professionals, specifically nurses that assist with lung transplant care. This can be determined because the more you read into the article the more specific the information becomes directed towards lung transplant in cystic fibrosis patients. This article is also in a journal for perioperative nurses and therefore when publishing they understand that the majority of their audience will be perioperative nurses.
The reason Neufeld and Keith published this article is to further educate about cystic fibrosis. There are multiple manifestations of cystic fibrosis, but as the genetic disorder progresses the option of lung transplant becomes more and more evident (Neufield & Keith, 2012). The content in this article provided me with the information needed to understand the pathophysiology and manifestations of CF. By understanding the mutation of chromosome 7 leading to electrolyte imbalance thus causing ineffective mucociliary clearance in the lungs, I can then better understand why my friend is consistently coughing attempting to remove these secretions. The article Special Needs Populations: Care of the Patient with Cystic Fibrosis by Katie Neufeld and Lauren Keith gave insight through all processes of cystic fibrosis from its origin to its treatment to allow a better understanding of cystic fibrosis as a whole. The pathophysiology is important to recognize because once a diagnosis, such as CF, is understood at a cellular level it is easier to comprehend when symptoms are
