Dave Barry Rhetorical Analysis

Dave Barry, uses several rhetorical devices to persuade his male and female readers to rethink their acceptance of social norms. Barry uses a hyperbole to exaggerate women’s view of looking similar to an animal. Barry declares, “She thinks that at any moment a municipal animal-control officer is going to throw a net over her and haul her off to the shelter.” Barry’s exaggeration of women’s ideal beauty shows that a majority of women think of themselves so poorly that no matter how time and effort is put into looking presentable, they dismiss the idea that they look acceptable to the public. The hyperbole exaggerates women’s beauty in order to illustrate the harsh criticism women put on themselves, as well as to create a response from the readers.
