The Declaration of Independence serves many purposes. It was a document declaring the US to be independent of the British Crown. It is an important part of American democracy because first it contains the ideals or goals of our nation. This document signifies the birth of a nation, instructs free citizen and provides hope for all people who want to be free. It is the birth certificate of America. It is the reason why we celebrate the 4th of July every year because it was signed on July 4th, 1976 by the congressional representative of the Thirteen Colonies. As the book states, it is “the boldest assertions of freedom.” (Sayre, 2013) It provided freedom for anyone enslaved in America and in other countries. Many countries based their constitutions on the United States. The ringing phrases of The Declaration of Independence speak to everyone who strives for liberty and supports the principles of self-government. That commitment to freedom is still embraced by Americans today. The remedy is to recognize that in a diverse nation, there is no permanent majority. We all benefit when our rights are protected. Lasting political unity can come only from respecting freedom first. Every significant struggle for justice in America, from the very beginning of its history, including the fights against slavery, for civil rights, for women’s rights and for workers’ rights, was led by people who pointed to the Declaration of Independence and challenged the nation to do what was right by those principles.
