5. Gregor’s transformation is metaphorical for he becomes so depressed with his average job, the treatment he receives by his family and society that he falls into a negative mental state. This state of mind causes Gregor to perceive himself as an insect, worthless. Gregor’s own depression manifests in the form of self-depreciation, he views himself as a roach, a bug most of society hates and wants dead. Gregor in actuality is so depressed that he cannot physically get himself to leave his bed and his room, his will to live, gone. Likewise, rather than starving himself because he realizes he is a burden, he refuses to eat because he has no will to live due to his depression. His family grows angry because they have no idea how to help
