As you can see from the return address on the envelope I have safely made it to the battlegrounds and I am writing you for the first time since I left Canada to fight in the war. I hope you are all well, and I also hope that the weather is nice at home. The weather has been horrible these days, I miss the nice weather in Canada. I wish I was home with all of you right now.
In other news, the war is extremely brutal. We wake up early every morning knowing that there is a possibility that we might die that day. We stay in trenches and prepare for battle, the trenches are dirty and full of diseases. There are rats in the trenches as well, these rats eat the dead and rotting bodies of soldiers. I am afraid I am going to get a disease called “Trench Foot” which can result in decapitating my legs. The trenches are dirty and full of garbage, diseases, and many other filthy things. I can’t even start to describe the smell, it’s horrifying, it always smells like cigarette buds mixed with garbage and the water doesn’t help the smell either. Even though battling in the trenches is difficult, battling on land is even worse. I was with the Captain Thain MacDowell one day during a battle and we got separated from the group. Luckily, captain formed a plan and got us back safely. The captain is great, he is always looking out for us and always puts us first. He has saved many people, he is also very good at making strategic decisions. I am starting to have some regrets about coming to fight because the war is scary and I am always afraid that I might make the wrong move and get shot by a machine gun. Machine guns can shoot 600 bullets every minute. There is also a chance that I might get sniped with a rifle instead. Sometimes when
