A popular belief is that America was founded by the English who came to America to escape religion persecution, this is true; however, they a small group and were not even the first people who came to America. The first successful colony was founded in Jamestown, Virginia to look for gold. This colony was a project of the Virginia Company. Most of the inhabitants were goldsmiths and jewelers that did not appreciate farming which lead to most of them dying. The Virginia Company started recurring more people by starting the “the Hard Right System.” This promised fifty acres of land to each person that a settler paid to send over. This colony had a hard time surviving but with the growing of tobacco was later used to make profit for the colony and helping it be successful.
An important concept to know is the difference between Puritans and Puritans. Puritans believed the congregation should determine leadership not bishops. Puritans believed the only people who could vote was church members. Pilgrims, however, wanted to separate completely from the church of English. After the Mayflower Compact, most died of starvation. Some were saved by Indians who shared food with the Pilgrims. Indians taught them how to plant food and fish. Native Americans gave food and fur to the English. The English gave iron and weapons to the Native Americans. This relationship changed things, Native Americans started focusing on hunting to gain fur instead of their agriculture. The Native American tribes started fighting over land to hunt on. The English settlers started fencing in property to claim rights to it and letting their animals roam free and eating the Native American’s crops, in result, made the Native Americans
