Advantages of the north and the south In the civil War the North and the South had their advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages and disadvantages are the railroads. The North had more railroads than the South witch made it easier for the north to get more equipment, troops, and supplies to the camps faster than the south. The North had 20,000 miles of railway, the South had 10,000 worth of railway. The North also had a greater population with 22 Million people, the South had only about 9 Million people. The North also had a bigger military the battles were about five to two. The North had more money so they could receive more imports from other countries. The South also had a strong motivation, they wanted to keep their traditions and their ways of life. The South fought on their home territory so they knew how to obtain it. The North had a week motivation for the war, they fought for small reasons. The Northern officers were not trained enough for battle, the soldiers due to the lack of knowledge of war they were not aggressive. The North had to fight on unknown territories in the south. The South had a weakness in their leadership, with their leadership skills of Jefferson Davis. They had no navy which made them vulnerable from attacks from the sea. The South's lack of people and supplies which made them less equipt to go into battle. They had little money which made them not get allot of supplies from other countries. They had a weaker government than the North. The Union (North) blocked off all Southern ports so they couldn't trade with Europe, this made it so they didn’t receive any supplies. Next the North took control of the Mississippi River so they couldn't use it to get troops into battle, this also made Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana from the confederacy.
