The Supreme Court case of the District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) changed the understanding of the Second Amendment. The case was created when police officer, Dick Heller, was denied a permit to keep a handgun in his home. There was a law in Washington, DC that banned all handguns at he time. Heller argued that the law violated the Second Amendment and his individual right to carry a gun for self defense. The Supreme Court came to a decision in favor of Heller by a 5-4 vote. Justice Scalia gives the majority's opinion, and he successfully uses historical context to backup his statements. Scalia delivers the majority's opinion in a very effective way.
