Each year colleges and universities across the country take the time to participate in the Its On Us Campaign. This campaign kicks off in October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and is accompanied by seminars, discussions, and demonstrations organized by universities and others. Since its inception, the Tennessee State University athletic department has dedicated significant amounts of time, energy, and resources to raise awareness to domestic violence among student-athletes. TSU begins the Its On Us Campaign by placing informational posters throughout their athletic facilities. These posters contain various statistics pertaining to domestic violence. Whether it is in the academic center, training room, or student lunge, a student-athlete can find a poster warning them of the signs of domestic abuse. By placing these informative pieces in areas were students frequent the most, it is the hope of Senior Women’s Administrator Valencia Jordan that they begin to recognize abuse. “We want to make sure that they are equipped to know the signs [of abuse] so that they may get out of a relationship or help a friend,” states Ms. Jordan. With the help of Associate Athletic Director Jennifer Bell and the TSU Women’s Center representatives form the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence and the YWCA held a seminar for the student-athletes. In this workshop, students participated in skits in which they demonstrated what they would do if they found themselves in an abusive relationship.
