Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish conquistador. He led many famous expeditions including the one where the Inca empire was conquered. Pizarro died in June 1541 aged between 65 and 70 when a group of heavily armed men stormed his palace. His body was interred in the cathedral courtyard briefly until his head and body were separated, put in separate boxes and buried under the floor of the cathedral. In 1892 a body was exhumed from the cathedral floor and put on display in a glass box. It was thought to be the body of Pizarro but in 1977 men working to fix the cathedrals foundations discovered a lead box which had an inscription that read “here is the head of Don Francisco Pizarro Demarkes, Don Francisco Pizarro who discovered Peru and presented
