Down Syndrome Children Should Be Separated

Ever since I was a little girl, I always wondered why the special needs kids were separated from the other kids in school. In my opinion, I think that some of the special needs kids should not have to be separated. Down syndrome kids in particular should be included in the classroom with other kids, if they are able to do things normally. If they aren’t able to do things normally, then they should not be separated. This paper will discuss only, Down syndrome and the 3 types of Down syndrome known as the standard trisomy 21, translocation, and Mosaicism.
Down syndrome can occur when there is a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. There are support groups and organizations found all over the United States to help with Children who have Down syndrome. Many people believe that people with Down syndrome cannot perform activities like normal people. “They are active participants in educational, social and recreational activities (National Down Syndrome Society [NDSS], 2012).”
One type of Down syndrome is standard trisomy 21. Trisomy 21 refers to chromosome 21. Instead of there being two chromosomes, there are three. Also they have 47 chromosomes. This means that “the two number 21 chromosomes fail to separate and both instead of one, become incorporated into either the egg cell or the sperm (Down Syndrome International).” Standard trisomy 21 is the most common type of Down syndrome. “More than 90% of Down syndrome cases are caused by Trisomy 21 (American Pregnancy Association [APA], 2016).” Children with Down syndrome have complications with
