Have you ever vacationed on an island that has an odd back story? Introducing the Easter Island! Easter Island has a fascinating history such as who inhabited the island first and how the civilization got there or even how Easter Island’s famous statues ‘moved’. Background information: Easter Island is only about sixty-three square miles and the closest country to Easter Island is more than two thousand miles away. Easter Island is located in the South Pacific Ocean. Many historians believe that the Polynesian seafarers were the first to inhabit the island while other historians thought the first inhabitants were from Peru. Most of the statues were carved at Rano Raraku, a huge quarry inside one of the three extinct volcanoes that form the island. Then, they were moved to various locations on the island, some of them more than eleven miles away.” These pieces of information show how immense the sizes of these statues are and how many historians say these statues ‘walked’ which led to them being in a different location compared to where they were carved.
