The Elizabethan Era was during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. It was between 1558-1603. This was when nobles were still poor people. Life in Elizabethan Era was difficult because of clothing, religion, and disease. A main reason why life was hard during the Elizabethan Era was because of disease. The Bubonic Plague was the most dreaded disease of Shakespeare time. This was carried by fleas living in fur of rats. The Bubonic Plague swept through London in 1563, 1578-9,1582-1592-3. Outbreaks in 1563 were the most ferocious, each wiping out over one quarter of London’s population. Symptoms included red, grossly inflamed and swollen lymph nodes called buboes, high fever, delirium, and convulsions. Smallpox broke out two years before Shakespeare's birth, 1562. Queen Elizabeth, 29, was attacked by the virus which causes high fever, vomiting, excessive bleeding, and pus-filled scabs that leave dead pitted scars. She recovered but was permanently bald and had to wear an extra thick layer of makeup. Syphilis was the last, yet most deadliest disease that broke out during this era. Upper Class fashion was more rich, sumptuous materials and elegant styles to clothes worn by lower class using basic material. Each item would have to be designed. Men had to wear shirt, stockings, cod piece, corset for underclothes. Doublet, separate sleeves, breeches, belt, ruff, cloak, shoes and a hat for over clothes. For women, smock, stockings, corset, hooped skirt, roll stomacher, petticoat, kirtle, forepart partlet for underclothes. Gown, separate sleeves, ruff, cloak, shoes and a hat for overclothes. This related back to the theme because it shows that a person would have to wear rich new stuff to feel welcomed.
