English: Does the current Australian flag represent who we are today and who we as a nation want to be?

My opinion is that the Australian flag should be changed because it doesn’t represent who we are as 21st century Australians or who we are as a modern multicultural nation. The current Australian flag is almost totally based on our British heritage from over two hundred years ago. It has a blue ensign, with the Union Jack in the upper hoist also known as the canton. The Federation star is located in the lower hoist. There are five Southern Cross stars which are all located in the fly half. This Australian flag only represents Australians who identify with Great Britain. It doesn’t represent the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, or those of us from other countries. Furthermore, I believe that we should change our flag so it is distinctive from other flags, and uniquely Australian. Lastly, I will describe my ideal Australian flag and demonstrate how my design better represents us as Australians and as a nation.

Such a flag would make sense at international sporting events because we could proudly wave the flag that would show the world that we are Australians. By including the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait it would lessen the need to fly separate flags.
In conclusion we NEED to change our current Australian flag to include the indigenous people and show that they are an important part of our country. Our flag should be distinctive enough for the whole world to know its Australia’s flag. We MUST take action now to ensure a flag that represents us and our modern nation! A change to the flag would also be inclusive of all the people who have come from other countries and are now proudly
