First Impressions In today’s day and age, the initial thought is physical looks play a huge role in relationships. That idea might change after the person reveals their personality. In the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano desperately wants to express his true feelings to his cousin and love, Roxane. However, his belief in physical looks plays as a mental and physical roadblock in his pursuit of Roxane’s love. Cyrano thinks his nose is ugly and has very low self-esteem over it. Cyrano’s words express that he believes physical looks matter. However, in reality, physical looks really don’t matter and Cyrano and Roxane realize this over the course of the play. Roxane loved Christian from her first impressions of him, “ [Christian] is a proud-noble-young-brave-beautiful.”(63) However, she didn’t know anything about his inside self and personality. Roxane was so into Cyrano’s words that she completely hated Christians words, “I adore you!”(102), “and that displeases me As much as it you had grown ugly.”(102) Roxane loved Christian for Cyrano’s words, but Cyrano didn’t realize that. They start to like this person(lust) and soon realize that person isn’t for them. The person might be pretty on the outside, but the inside is a completely different story. Also, at first you might not like someone because how they physically look but over time that might change. You get to know their personality and that’s what matters. A connection from Cyrano de Bergerac to another play can be to Romeo and Juliet. They’re both star-crossed lovers and both face many obstacles to get together. In the end, they finally have a chance to get together however tragedy strikes and they never get together. I can also connect this back to my real life examples.
