The foster care system in the United States has numerous flaws to say the least. The direct result from our inadequate foster care systems is our youth suffering. Growing up as a child is difficult enough, but adding the distress of not having a stable home, or support system is a recipe for a nightmare. The foster care system in America is poorly set up, it is miraculous that a small amount of children successfully makes it through. The flaws being with the leaders of the foster care system, these individuals have absolutely no first hand experience with foster care systems. Moving on, another flaw is the foster parents themselves, most of the foster care parents are no where near the competency level they should be to take care of a child. Lastly, a huge flaw in the foster care system is a lack of programs for foster children when they turn into adults, and are no longer able to receive support from the foster care system. The foster care system in America has low success rates, because there are many flaws in the system that make it merely impossible for the children to succeed.

A system cannot be expected to work effectively if the people leading the system have never had first hand experience. Also, there are devastating results such as neglect, physical abuse and sexual abuse, if the foster care system allows incompetent people to be foster parents. Finally, since there is a lack of programs the foster care system offers to help young people transition into the real world, many of them are living unsuccessful lives, some even in jail.
