Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an african abolitionist and slave who helped hundreds of enslaved people escape from slavery through a concept called The Underground Railroad, where she served as a conductor. The Underground Railroad was a secret network that gave runaway slaves safe places to hide out as they traveled up north to become free. Although Harriet became free in the 1850’s she returned to the southern states 19 times to help more slaves reach freedom. After Tubman’s time helping as a conductor, she served as a spy and nurse in one of the most important wars in the United States, the civil war.

Having her as a slave was a great risk for slave owners, knowing that she was sworn against slavery and had a passion to escape from it. She not only want to save herself from slavery, but she also wanted to save the millions and millions of other slaves. This shows you that Harriet was a gracious and kind person. Harriet did not stay in the north for long, with other fellow abolitionist. Instead she returned to the south nineteen times to help family and other enslaved people. In one instance, she heard slave owners reading a paper about her saying she was illiterate, so she picked up a newspaper and pretended to read it, to flee from suspicion. As you can see Harriet risked her life for others. “This year, the Tubman celebrations extend beyond officialdom. On Sunday afternoon, thousands of black women have pledged to walk 100 minutes in her honor in events across the country called “We Are Harriet: A Moving Tribute.” And a banquet Saturday night in Cambridge organized by a group of activists was the “social event of the century,” said Donald Pinder, president of the small but dedicated group that runs the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center in Dorchester.” Since the death of Harriet Tubman, she has inspired many people. A hundred and four years later people are still remembering Harriet by taking part of events to honor and remember her.
