Iago has been described using various colorful words throughout the book; villain, cruel, selfish chaotic, etc. Iago is a powerful predator in Othello. His skill is finding a person’s weakness and using it to his advantage to manipulate that person’s actions or thoughts. His talent helps him snake his way into the lives of others and exploit them. So, you why would he use his skills in such an evil way; it’s because of his jealousy and envy of what others have that he does not. Jealously drives men to do unthinkable things.
Not all villains are good at plotting and executing their schemes. One villain could be ranked higher than another. One of the ways for a villain to be good at planning schemes is being able to be trusted by others. That’s just what Iago plans to do and succeeds in doing just that. Iago is able to mingle with anybody no matter what their personality is, builds a rapport with them, builds a good relationship and ultimately gets the character to trust him.
