The National Japanese American Memorial, also commonly known as the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism is located in Washington D.C. at the intersection of Louisiana Ave, New Jersey Ave. and D. Street. The landscaped site consists of a pathway bordered by curved and inscribed granite walls leading to an open central courtyard in which stands a bronze sculpture of Japanese cranes as well as a memorial temple bell. Initially conceptualized as a monument to the loyalty, patriotism and contribution of Japanese-American Veterans who served during the Second World War (1939-1945) in the highly decorated 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team units however, he site has subsequently come to symbolize the sacrifice of all Japanese-American persons who were relocated and detained in internment camps from 1942 until 1945 and who have since tirelessly defended Civil Rights. …show more content…
The Memorial's construction was authorized by federal statute PL 102-502 and signed into law by President George Bush (1924-, Pres. 1989-1993) on October 24, 1992 following the passage of the Civil Liberties Act (1988) and formal federal apology to the Japanese-American community for the unlawful wartime internment in the 1940s. The structure of the Memorial was designed by architect Davis Buckley while the Memorial Court's central statue of Bronze Cranes trapped in barbed wire was created by the Japanese-American artist Nina A. Akamu (1955-). The site was dedicated in November 2000, turned over to the national government in 2002, and has since remained under the care of and been maintained by the National Parks
