The House on Mango Street is written by Sandra Cisneros. I found this book interesting because sje tells you different stories and events that took place throughout her life and how she struggled to make it out of what people consider the “ghetto”. Sandra made it clear that we don’t have to grow up rich, live in the best neighborhood, or wear the best clothes to become successful. This book is awesome, especially since it is written by a Latina. One of the readings I related to the most was “Hairs”. She described the different type of hair that her family had. When I was reading the story the first thing that I thought about was my four sisters. We all have different type of hair. My sister doesn’t like her hair because she has really curly hair and my other sisters including me have curly wavy hair. Esperanza family bought a house in a lower-class Latino area in Chicago on Mango Street. It was nothing she had pictured it would be. She dreamed to one day leave that house, and have her own. She wrote about making friends and her neighbors. As you were reading the story you can visually picture the people and the neighborhood. An example from the reading was her neighbor. She was a beautiful lady, but was self-conscience of about her weight. She didn’t speak any English so she had trouble communicating with the people in her neighborhood. She preferred to stay inside since she felt that she didn’t belong there. Esperanza feels that speaking English in the United States give you the opportunity to be somebody in life.
