Tourette Syndrome
Imagine if your body did embarrassing things that you had no control over. If you had Tourette syndrome that would be you, no choice, things would just burst out of you. Since people from 5-10 have tourette’s it makes a big impact on everyday life and School. Kids tend to get bullied and get in trouble for their irresistible tics.
Tourette syndrome is a unique genetic disorder. Unresistable tics occur very often and are a distraction and challenge in everyday life. Tourette syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that consists of uncontrollable and at times embarrassing tics. It usually affects people from the age of 5-10 and rarely occurs in adulthood. However tourette seems to fade when people are in early adulthood. There is only one major symptom of tourette syndrome, which would be tics. Tics are like a sneeze, you can’t control it. In other words it is an involuntary movement, sound, or series of sounds and movements. although, there are different types of tics. Motor tics, vocal tics, and complex tics. Motor tics would be blinking or nodding your head. Vocal tics is something like yelling, grunting or in some cases swearing. Complex tics is an example of the two and they happen at the same time or back to back. These tics can be treated but not permanently. Tics can be treated with medication in case of severe interference and CBIT (“Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics”). CBIT is behavioral therapy especially for tourette’s. As I stated earlier there is no permanent treatment for tourette’s besides waiting it out until early adulthood when it starts to fade away or get milder. Everybody has their own tics, that's a given, but they won’t have to have them
