Our most enjoyable experiences of personal refreshment have been surrounded with a setting of beauty. Beauty has the capacity to revigorate and refreshes our spirit. When we are celebrating great moments or conducting importing ceremonies/events we always select beautiful settings and play beautiful music. Beauty is able to bring not just a magnificent experience but also a positive self-assuring image. Beauty makes the aesthetic dimension of our lives. Unfortunately around the world many people are unhappy with their working environment and are unable to perform their best. The working environment for many is described as draining, blocking creativity and imagination. The way that people feel about their workplace is important part of their success because of how it affects moral’s health. Comfort in the workplace is important especially for people who spend most of their times at work. The CEO Max De Pree described his workplace as place where he can get work done in an atmosphere that is warm and friendly. Tom Chappell, the founder of Tom’s of Maine set up basket of fruits all around the workplace for the employees to help themselves when they feel for a bite. This initiative redirected the whole energy of his workplace. The workers felt appreciated, respected and their work valued.
As human we take pride in our efforts and contributions, and beauty allows the space to exercise our creativity and express ourselves. It also allows us to develop an artistic edge. In the workplace, it can be seen through our performance and the satisfaction it brings can make our lives enjoyable. Many people long to be happy if not all and this where the fifth chapter try to answer a question many ask; what is the meaning of life? The author presented different scholastic point of views. The very first one is Nihilism which takes a cynic position on “nothing makes sense or that everything is meaningless”. In the early twentieth century nihilism was overly accepted and influenced many existentialist philosophers. However nowadays that view is not as popular as it used to be and left room for other views like relativism and absolutism. With relativism, people are able to attach their own meaning to life. Like the author put it, it is a “take charge sort of view”. The freedom that relativism offers, knows no limit which was among the many critics this point view had received. Absolutism in the other hand, take into account that the fact there is meaning in everything and that we don’t necessary have to create a meaning to things. That view also agrees that the meaning of things should serve as a foundation and guide for our thoughts and efforts. Absolutism ideas are largely embraced by religious believers because of the association of meaning, goals and purposes according to God’s law. In the absolute point of view, the meaning of life is creative love. Love is the most dynamic and moving power in the world from which great things originate. In our personal lives as much as in our enterprises, creative love is the bedrock of our meaningful innovations. Our daily efforts are immensely tied with our loving creativity capacity because we as human perceive a sense of wholeness as being part of something greater that connects us.
In chapter 6, Tom Morris lays the question of, what business is. He relied on the belief that “human beings develop to their fullest potential in structured activities. And that is what business is fundamentally all about: the art of creating, maintaining, and refining structures of relationships and activities in which human beings can grow, prosper, and live life to the fullest.” In our modern world, business integrated every aspect of our society and is bringing innovations to simplify our lives, to entertain us and maintain our happiness.
