The word empathy means to be able to relate to other people and their problems. Often times people refer to empathy as "walking in someone else shoes." Empathy is an important theme used in the short story "Marigolds", and the two excerpts from the novels "The Jungle", and "To Kill a Mockingbird" In the excerpt from the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" empathy is used when Atticus explains to his daughter that she can not understand someone until you consider things from his point of view. In the short story “Marigolds”, empathy is used when the main charter Lizabeth, feels guilty for destroying her neighbor's flower garden. in the excerpt the jungle the author makes you feel empathy for the factory workers.
