This quote shows propaganda is extremely effective, but if used for too long citizens in a society will pick up on this ‘brainwashing’ and revolt against these set societal norms. As Montag identifies that the world he is living in is a dystopian society, his ideology of the world and his perspectives change. In Fahrenheit 451 and the real world by lying to the people you govern, you leave a trail of lies that is only coverable for so long. Montag picks up on this trail when he takes the Bible from the old lady's house (Bradbury 35). From this point on his curiosity consumes him and he begins to spread his knowledge to others. Since the government's propaganda had covered the truth about books and knowledge from the citizens of society for so long, the lies about how horrible books are can only be covered up for a finite period. As Montag discovers the truth he is like a cancer cell in the body; the amount of influence he has on other cells (people) becomes exponential.
