Rough Draft of Prove the Genre Essay
Imagine living in a world with no books in it, what would our society be like? This world exists in the novel Fahrenheit 451. This engaging and detailed book is written by Ray Bradbury. The book tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman in a futuristic society. In this society the possession of, or reading books is illegal. The fireman's job is to burn books when they find them (they also end up burning people who won’t surrender their books). In the novel, Guy Montag discovers that books are actually a very important resource that helps expand the mind. Montag then tries to find people that will help him save books from being burned and gone forever. Throughout the novel there is evidence of propaganda which makes for an unstable society (a key component in dystopian society, example: the law against books). This book also displays a lot of distrust in society which forces the main character to question the government, just like how Guy Montag begins to question if books really are bad. The final example that points towards a dystopian society is the fact that independent thought and certain freedoms are forbidden. The government in Montag’s society basically tells them, “Don’t read books, and if you do we will burn them. If you resist we will burn you.” This makes Montag see what his government is taking away from him. All of this put together forces him to take action to try and change his world.
