In 1788, prisoners of the European government were sent to Australia because the prisons were too full. After the transportation of these convicts, they have helped to shape modern Australia through many different ways. When convicts first inhabited the newly found regions of Australia, they built towns, grew crops and built roads, which ultimately started civilisation. they created trade and expansion routes to help grow the booming British empire.

In the short term, they quickly opened trade routes and built buildings to help facilitate the sudden increase in population. The Hyde park barracks are a primary example of how convict labour was used to create important historical buildings. Francis Greenaway was a convict who designed this building. This church was constructed between 1819 and 1824. It is the oldest church building in Sydney. It Is a prime example of the architectural work of Francis Greenaway who was a convict. This is also an example of buildings that were built by convict labour. Convict labour to create these buildings has helped to shape Australia by providing us with strong structures that have withstood the harsh effects of time.
