The purpose of this paper is to state the big idea for each text, illustrate supports for the big idea, restate the big idea, and restate the purpose of the sermon. In identifying the big idea of Philippians 4:1-2, Psalm 1, and John 13:31-35, a significant, “single declarative statement must be defined and verified with reference as least to the hearers.” Robinson reiterate, “you will not only try to determine the writer’s idea, but you will also want to discern how the idea is developed in the passage.”
The big idea in Philippians 4;1-2, depicts Paul expressing his gratitude from a letter to the generosity of the congregation of Philippi and testified his intimacy towards them in return. His emphasis for them to care about each other and to get along will enhance their spiritual maturity and growth. He further informed them that they were his crown and joy. His imprisonment did not deter the vision of his tasks nor discouraged his mission. The mission of the cross, resurrection and ascension is declared, yet his disciple remain naive to Jesus’ message. Jesus commanding the greatest task for them to follow remain unclear, because, they were yet to understand what laid ahead. Jesus preparation to demonstrate his true nature of being God in the flesh was spoken, yet misunderstood. Peter, in light of confusion, questioned Jesus of his whereabout only to be answered with words of his future denial of Jesus. Furthermore, the expression of Jesus was passionately voiced of the importance to love one’s neighbor as thyself. The key message of unconditional love for one another would be deemed and declared as the true disciples of Jesus
