The eight categories of verbal communication include dependency, counterdependency, fight, flight, pairing, counterpairing, work, and unscorable statements. The following are descriptions and examples of each category that contain statements that individuals within a group must learn when communicating with fellow team members.

Dependency statements - these are the ones that go along with the dominant mood of the group and tend to survey others for direction. Example: I wholeheartedly agree that the ABC software is the best for the agency. What can we provide to show proof of this to the other members?
Counterdependency statements - these are the ones that resist leadership and the direction in which the group is moving. Example: I do not think that the ABC software is the best for the agency. However, the current softwares that we are

Flight statements - these are the ones that tend to do the least work and show their lack of commitment to the group. Example: I feel that we have too many working on this project and if I could contribute to the discussion it may not be anything that is useful.
Pairing statements - these are the ones that try to pull the team together by providing a friendly atmosphere and support for all members. Example: I feel that you have done an excellent job by comparing the products and we appreciate all of your hard work.
Counter Pairing statements - these are the ones that resist and show a disconnect within the group and with each team member. Example: I believe that the information that has been provided does not relate to the issues that we are having with our current software packages. If we put in more time with our current softwares, then we may have better
