Cancer is one of the most well- known deadly diseases in the United States. Cancer can be found almost anywhere on your body, but I am only going to provide you with information about one of those places where it forms and that is the eye. The history over eye cancer is wide-spread. Also, the risk for eye cancer may possibly be related to mutation of one of the genes. This gene is sometimes associated with melanoma. Once, there was a case where a 60 year old male was referred to an Eye Cancer Center with a 18 x 18 mm base, and 9.3 mm high dome- shaped tumor in his left eye. There has been another case where a 32 year old male presented “two pupils” in just one of his eyes.The world's oldest documented case of cancer is from ancient Egypt. …show more content…
The surgery usually includes removal of the tumor and its surrounding tissues. The Surgery for eye melanoma (like I said before) is done by an ophthalmologist, which is usually under the microscope. The Patient is usually made unconscious. Sometimes the only choice a doctor has in treating melanoma is to remove the eye. If so, a person with one eye may have trouble with depth perception. people worry about what they will look like when they have an eye removed. The cosmetic surgery available today usually yields good cosmetic results. To fill the area left by the missing eye, the person is fitted for a artificial eye. The artificial eye will look and behave almost the same as a natural eye.
Another type of treatment is “radiation therapy.” Radiation therapy is the use of high- energy x- rays or other particles to destroy the cancer cells. A doctor who specializes in giving radiation therapy to treat cancer is called a radiation oncologist. A radiation therapy schedule usually will consist of a specific number of treatments given over a set period of time. When radiation treatment is given using implants, it is called internal radiation therapy, or plaque therapy.
