Who did it? People say that becoming successful leads to a downfall, others say that once you fall you cannot get back up because something is holding you down. Jay Gatsby, a successful businessman that slowly started to fall but never had the chance to get up because there were factors holding him down. Gatsby’s downfall did not happen right away, there were many factors that led to it. His past, present, and meeting Daisy led to his downfall. Gatsby is responsible for his own downfall because his past, present, and Daisy created an image that was intangible. Gatsby’s past was one factor that led to his downfall. Meeting Daisy was a positive and negative. He met the love of his life however he would never be able to give her the things she wanted. “He found her excitingly desirable” (148). “He had deliberately given Daisy a sense of security; he let her believe that he was a person from much the same stratum as herself-that he was fully able to take care of her” (149). Because of this Gatsby did everything he could to be with her and impress her form showing his house, clothes, etc. and trying to convince her to leave Tom. However, he did not know that Daisy moved on from that part of her life and started living a new one. Many factors can create an image that is intangible which leads to a downfall.
