Envision being scared to go out, because you are being rejected. That’s how Gem feels in the story Fatal Flower and she wears a mask. A mask is a disguise. It is also a façade that suppresses trueness in someone. Masks are worn by people not to reveal their true selves and cloak them from who they really are. Masks are worn by everyone but for various reasons. Masks are worn by people to avoid hurt and to fit in with certain groups. While wearing a mask, people do not have to worry about others’ opinions and judgments. The roles they assume in public keep their real personalities hidden behind the mask, and it obscures their true nature. Masks are useful because they let you be whoever you want to be.

Sometimes people wear masks to feel confident. For example, in the story Fatal Flower by Enes Smith, Gem thinks she does not look beautiful, so she changes her look by drinking a potion so she can interact with others, and be seen differently. This allows her to go out and not be ashamed of herself. She is also known as the most beautiful girl, and that makes more her confident. However, the next day the king gets sick and he needs her heart to survive because she is so beautiful, which means that she has to pay the price for wearing a mask. But this is only one situation which is fiction. There are times when wearing a mask is beneficial and does make you more confident. Another example was shown in the article Still Me Inside by Mia Goda. This was shown when Mia cut her hair and altered her look completely. When she changed her look, she felt like she did not have to obscure her true self anymore and she was able to be herself. At the concert, everybody judged her by the way she looked at first. But at the end, one of her friend’s dad tells her that she performed better than last time. That encourages her not to be what others want her to and to just be herself, even if others disapprove. That also shows that people should not be judged by masks because masks are a facade and can be changed at any time to benefit them at different times.
