In addition, Usher, the narrator, Irene and her brother all react in ways that are seen when their imagination control their rational thinking. The fear that builds up in these characters are a key element in the way imagination overpowers their reasoning because it makes them do actions towards the imminent danger that is making them feel scared. Usher hears noises that are coming to life when reading a novel and is very anxious because of the thought that has him buried and caught up with the novel. When reading this novel, Usher began to remember that the noises he actually began to hear wasn't a coincidence that the novel was stating, but it was the noises of his sister. Usher began to show his nervousness through the way he would sway his body and ignoring the presence of his old friend.
