Before June 14, 1923 there was no state or federal rules governing the use of the United States Flag. On June 14, 1923 all of that changed as a result of the National Flag Code being adopted by the National Flag Conference that was attended by individuals from the Military. The Flag Code was made because it was a way to try to protect and preserve the Flag. The beginning of the Flag Code started in June. “On June 22, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved House Joint Resolution 303 codifying the existing customs and rules governing the display and use of the flag of the United States by civilians” (Luckey 2). Since the Flag Code has been instated it has showed us where to place our hand in the pledge of allegiance, or where to place head wear. Additionally with the Flag Code a separate procurement was incorporated within the Federal Criminal Code, which set up criminal penalties …show more content…
Some examples of these are “Do not let the flag touch the ground. Do not fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency. Do not carry the flag flat, or carry things in it. Do not use the flag as clothing. Do not store the flag where it can get dirty. Do not use it as a cover” (Flag Etiquette). These special rules showed respect by keeping it clean, and pristine because if it is dirty, or ripped it's shows that people really don't care for the flag, or the history of the United States. The Flag Code in theory was made to protect the Flag. Since the Flag Code was made it did for the most part, but people still damage the flag in certain ways. An example of this is during Fourth of July when people buy the cheap small flags, and either throw them away, or drop them to the ground. Though this can probably be dismissed because they were at least used in a patriotic way. Nevertheless the creation of the Flag Code helps preserve our flag as a symbolism for our nation, and our
