Music is a very powerful tool that many filmmakers use to convey a feeling and tone in a film. In the process of making a film, the music is not just something the filmmakers put in without much thought. Just like many movies, Flag Wars has very a very deep meaning in the choice of the music they chose. Flag Wars is about how a community of African Americans face the trouble of dealing with groups of skilled workers looking for a place to stay. Throughout the movie, the filmmakers go from how communities and individuals like Chief Baba and Linda Michell deal with authorities and the ever inching and impending doom of their communities due to skilled workers and real-estate workers just looking for quick profit. To have music in a scene is just as important as not having any. For instance, at 29:00 in the movie, Chief Baba and Linda are talking about how Linda should let someone with “skills” to live in her house so that she could get the help she needs when she needs it. During this scene, the solo trumpet song is playing but you get the feeling that this version is more upbeat and cheerful. It gives us a good feeling that in a friendly banter with Chief Baba, Linda is trying to say that she is a strong independent woman who does not need any help. The scene that follows this is of Linda on the surgery bed getting ready to be operated on. During this whole scene, the is no music to show how serious and even sad it is that Linda is having surgery because of her alcohol abuse. This scene along with the absence of music shows to us that Linda that although she said that she does not need any help, she really does and everything she from dealing with court battles and cutting off the heat in her house are doing her no …show more content…
The theme is a very important aspect of a film. The theme is basically the main idea of the film and it can be expressed in many ways in a film. For instance, throughout the film church music was played after scene of a feeling of hope. Except after every scene that played church music, it is followed by a scene of despair or a reality check. It’s as if the filmmakers want us to feel that hope is easily taken away once one gets dragged back into reality and sees what is really happening. It is as if the filmmakers is trying to say anything that can go wrong will go wrong. A scene at 58min shows us of Linda being happy talking with her parents and basically saying she is going to be alright and that there is nothing to worry about. Right after this scene, church music starts to play and we get a sense of hope. But as we all know, the next scene is always of something bad and in this case, it is of Linda back in court. In this court, Linda is looking very fragile and sickly then she has ever been. The lack of music also goes even further to express the rock bottom situation she has gotten herself into. Right after a hopeful scene with church music, this scene breaks us back into reality. Another example would be at 1hr and 21 min in to the movie.
