18 year old RM football player, Mark Lamberg, was injured yesterday inat a game between Richard Montgomery and Rockville. The accident happened in the 4th quarter when Richard Montgomery was in the lead and two offensive players had caught the senior between them. His head was forced onto the ground as the two opposing players knocked him down with sheer force trying to get the ball. While both knocked him down, one of them managed to ram his helmet to the back of Mark’s head as he fell. Mark found himself dizzy and was unable to play, passing out on his way off the field. After he passed out, the referees had called immediate action to Lamberg and he was ushered off the fields to be examined in a nearby hospital. It was obvious from his current …show more content…
A concussion is when a person suffers a traumatic force to the head that internally injures the brain and how it functions. Actions such as falling or getting hit in the head, to name a few, can cause a concussion. Concussions happen because the skull is soft, despite being surrounded by spinal fluid and the covering of a skull. The brain, Oonce the brainit gets hit by an immense power it pushes back and forth between the walls of the skull. Fortunately for Mark and others, the effects of a concussion are seen for the most part short term. Each concussion is a different case. The signs of a concussion may not always be visible to others, but it is important that they receive medical attention soon to diagnose it. As such, injuries can result in other serious underlying conditions such as brain bleeding. Concussions are not dangerous as long as they do not happen repeatedly, which could lead to more long term health and mental problems like CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) or Alzheimer’s. The NFL has a long list of its own afflicted players and it is not brought attention on concussions. They have yet to implement more ways to make playing football safer and put less in risk. There are many examples such as the famous football player Tony Dorsett. Who is retired from the NFL, but suffers from clinical depression and memory problems. He is one of many who have suffered from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). CTE is caused by repeated incidents of head trauma such as concussions from playing football. The 59 year old Dallas football player has to live through the everyday struggle with the emotional and mental effects that these concussions have caused. After an entire career, the case of Dorsett tells us of what might happen to Mark Lamberg if he succumbs to more serious head injuries. The case of Andre Smith who was a 17 year old football player from Illinois who died from a concussion. He was similarly injured in the last quarter of the game and suffered a hit to the head. He then died the next day on a Friday. Which shows how serious concussions can be for young players. Sometimes players die from not having enough time to heal from a first concussion. In fact, a large number of concussions happen in high school football and the issue of concussion needs to be addressed for all
