In the short story “Charles” foreshadowing convinces us that Laurie is actually Charles. For example, Laurie takes delight when he tells his father about a rude word Charles supposedly said. Laurie’s mother explains, “His father bent his head down and Laurie whispered joyfully” (14). This shows that Laurie is excited to say the curse word, hinting at the fact that he has said it before. According to Laurie, Charles tried make the teacher upset by telling a little girl to say the explicative; she did, and then got her mouth washed out with soap while Charles didn’t get scolded or anything.
