Freedom Riders Research Paper

“In January 1961, two young activists named Gordo Carey and Tom Gaither shared a long bus ride from South California to New York. During the trip, the men batted around an interesting idea: a two-week bus ride to draw attention to states in the Deep South that refused to enforce federal anti-segregation laws. They even gave the ride a name: “Freedom Ride” (Shoup Kate 5). This story of how Freedom Riders started and began the movement is very crucial to having the base or knowledge about this important group. In this episode, the Freedom Riders commence the trip, and some ideas come out. This movement is based on trips through South America against the segregation bus terminal in 1961.The journey took place in some cities such as Virginia, Alabama, New Orleans, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina. During this journey the Freedom Riders sang spirituals and freedom songs “By early summer the Riders had been involved into a broad-based movement involving hundreds of activists representing a number of allied local, regional, and national rights organizations. Attracting a diver’s assortment of volunteers- black and white, young and old, male and female, religious and secular, Northern and Southern- the Freedom Riders movement transcended the traditional legalistic approach to civil rights, taking the struggle out of the courtroom and into the streets and jails of the Jim Crow South” (Raymond 2). The Supreme Court declared segregation in restrooms, restaurants, and waiting rooms to wait for the train.
